Please, trust me. Once you visit the United States, Oklahoma cannot be skipped. I already fell in love with it two years ago, when we first traveled there. We went to Hochatown, and visited a Rescue Center and Petting Zoo. We went back this time, we just had to see if the same people were working there and if we recognized some of the animals. And we actually did!
There’s something about this part of Oklahoma that stays with you. Tucked away near Broken Bow Lake and surrounded by forests, Hochatown feels like a quiet escape. A place where time softens and everything slows down just a little. It’s a different side of the United States, far from the big cities and constant movement, where nature and simplicity take the lead.
Oklahoma itself is often overlooked, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. It sits right in the heart of the country, known for its wide open landscapes, long stretches of road, and its place along the historic Route 66. There’s a deep sense of history here too, shaped by Native American heritage and a strong, authentic culture that you don’t always see, but can definitely feel.
Coming back to this small rescue center, recognizing faces, both human and animal, made everything feel incredibly personal. It reminded me that sometimes it’s not the big highlights of a trip that stay with you, but these quiet, meaningful moments in between.
Oklahoma, to me, is exactly that: the beauty in between.
Tip: Be sure to check out Turner Falls Park!
